Edited by Derk Bramer
SETTING: A steampunk fantasy world set in a fictionalized analogy to Victorian-era Europe.
SCENE: A sleepover at the palace between combat missions, after Godot has died.
CHARACTERS: The free-spirited Princess Ophelia and Miranda, her lady-in-waiting.
[LADY MIRANDA ENTERS PRINCESS OPHELIA'S BEDROOM]
Miranda:
Princess? Have you not yet gone to rest?
Ophelia:
I could not help thinking about your brother Godot...
Miranda:
...Oh.
Ophelia:
Do you remember how he would scold us, when we were younger?
Miranda:
*sigh* How could I forget?
[THE TWO FRIENDS REMINISCE]
Miranda:
Around the time I came to the palace as your playmate, yes?
Ophelia:
Indeed. I was thrilled to have a friend my age, for once.
Ophelia:
I'd sneak into your bed at night, and of course, Godot would
find me and lecture us both.
Ophelia:
How did it go? "When children don't stay asleep after their
bedtimes, a ghost appears and carries them away in a sack!"
Ophelia:
...Hehehe, how nostalgic. A ghost, he said.
Miranda:
As I recall, you were never scared of ghost stories at all.
In fact, you'd just beg my brother to continue...
Ophelia:
Heehee. If nothing else, his tales were always amusing.
Ophelia:
You, on the other hand, were quite frightened, were you not?
Miranda:
I-I was just a child! Thinking back, I can't believe I let
myself get spooked by a bunch of silly stories like tha—
[A RUSTLING NOISE IS HEARD]
Miranda:
Eek!
Ophelia:
...Miranda?
Miranda:
N-No, it's nothing... Nothing at all, Your High—
[THEY HEAR ANOTHER SOUND]
Miranda:
Ahhh!
Ophelia:
What is it?
Miranda:
Th-There's something outside the window! A wh-white shadow!
Ophelia:
I did not notice anything...
Miranda:
I-It's true! Something's moving and making creepy noises!
Ophelia:
Like a spectral sack...!?
Ophelia:
Then I shall go and take a look!
[OPHELIA EXITS]
Miranda:
Princess! It's too dangerous! Wh-Wh-What if it [f3is] a ghost!?
Miranda:
Maybe it heard us talking about it! The p-princess could get
thrown in its sack and taken away!
Miranda:
I have to save Her Highness! No, but... but...!
[MIRANDA SEES A "GHOST"]
Miranda:
Aaaiiieee!
[OPHELIA RETURNS]
Ophelia:
...'Twould seem some bed sheets were caught near the window.
Miranda:
Huh? B-B-B-Bed sheets...?
Ophelia:
It must have flown over from a clothes line earlier today.
The breeze caused it to flutter and rustle in the wind.
Miranda:
...
Ophelia:
...
Miranda:
...
Ophelia:
Miranda... Can it be that you're still afraid of ghosts?
Miranda:
...Yes, milady. Truth be told, they terrify me to this day.
Ophelia:
I did not know. You usually act so calm and collected.
Miranda:
I'd been holding it in as long as I could. I didn't want
Your Highness to see me in such a pitiful state.
Ophelia:
Heh... hahaha!
Miranda:
Th-This is no laughing matter!
Ophelia:
My apologies. I could not help it...
Ophelia:
Miranda, fearless warrior on the battlefield, cowering from
a spooky sheet! The contrast is amusing, you must admit.
Miranda:
I-It's your and Godot's fault I am this way to begin with!
Miranda:
Even as a child, you were so [f3amused] you just kept asking
for more and more details...!
Miranda:
And my brother, with that serious face of his, wouldn't stop
going on about what the ghost did with all the kids it took!
Miranda:
Thanks to you two, the fear of phantoms haunts me still...!
Ophelia:
I'm terribly sorry about all that.
[OPHELIA HUGS MIRANDA]
Ophelia:
But it makes me happy to hear you haven't changed a bit.
Miranda:
Are you implying I'm still a child?
Ophelia:
Oh Miranda, please do not pout.
Ophelia:
Now, let's hurry back to bed... before the ghosts find us.
Miranda:
Miladyyy!
Ophelia:
...Just kidding!
